How to Choose a Car Workshop in Singapore

Updated 2026-10-11 · Wrenchmap

Short answer: Choose a workshop that gives an itemised written quote with parts, labour and GST shown, tells you which parts it will use, diagnoses before replacing parts, offers a warranty on its work, and gives a dated invoice you can keep for your car warranty. Check its opening hours and how recent its customer reviews are.

Singapore has hundreds of independent workshops, many tucked into multi-storey industrial buildings in Kaki Bukit, Ubi, Sin Ming, Woodlands and Bukit Batok. Most do good work. These checks separate the ones that are easy to deal with from the ones that are not.

1. An itemised written quote

Ask for parts, labour and GST on separate lines. SingSaver’s advice is blunt: some quotes only show parts (SingSaver). An itemised quote is the only kind you can compare.

2. Named parts

Genuine, OEM-equivalent and aftermarket parts differ in price and in what your warranty dealer will accept. Ask which the quote uses, and get it on the invoice.

3. Diagnosis before parts

A fault code is a starting point, not a verdict. A good workshop tests before replacing, and tells you what the test showed. Be wary of a quote that replaces several parts “to be safe”.

4. A call before extra work

Agree upfront that any additional work needs your approval and a revised price.

5. A warranty on the work

Ask how long the workshop guarantees its labour and the parts it supplies, and get it in writing.

6. A dated invoice for your records

If the car is under warranty, you need dated invoices showing the work, mileage and parts. Dealers cannot reject a claim just because an independent workshop did the work, but they can if the records do not show the scheduled servicing was done (CCCS). See the warranty guide.

7. The right workshop for the car

Continental cars often need brand-specific diagnostic software; hybrids need trained hands for the high-voltage system. Ask before you book.

8. Hours that fit

Fewer than a third of the workshops in this directory publish Sunday hours. If you can only go at the weekend, filter for workshops open on Sunday.

9. Recent reviews

Read the newest reviews, not just the star rating, and look for mentions of the job you need.

Red flags

  • Pressure to decide on the spot
  • No written quote, or a quote with one total and no breakdown
  • Refusal to show or return the old parts
  • A tow truck that turns up uninvited after an accident: the Motor Claims Framework says to avoid unauthorised tow trucks and workshops (GIA MCF)

More questions

Should I always go to the nearest workshop?

For routine servicing, convenience matters and the nearest good one is fine. For a big job such as a gearbox or engine repair, it is worth travelling for a second opinion.

Is the cheapest quote the best?

Only if it covers the same work and parts. A low quote that shows parts only, excludes GST, or uses unnamed parts is not comparable.

What if a workshop finds more problems once the car is in?

Ask them to call you with a revised quote before doing any extra work, and agree that nothing is done without your go-ahead.
